Life Is Strange Vol. 1: Dust by Emma Vieceli, Claudia Leonardi and Andrea Izzo
comic-book, review
5/5 stars
Life is Strange is one of my favourite video games. Despite the flaws that even the remaster didn’t fix, the tale of the time-rewinding Max and her sidekick best friend Chloe is something I think back to frequently and with fondness.
I longed for more of their adventures. And yet, I was hesitant to read the comic. It was authored by different people and as Max swore off using her powers I felt that they would either come up with a way to force her hand (which I wouldn’t like) or… it’d be a bit… not exactly boring, but lacking the mystery of the games.
Well, this is why I’m not a writer. Of course the book fits very well within the Life is Strange genre/universe without having Max break her vow at the first available instance.
Moreover, it is emotionally exactly what I’d have wanted from a sequel — you get to see them happy, but also struggling to process the tragedy that happened and try to build a new life.
There’s no wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff there, but that doesn’t make mean it’s completely free of the supernatural that’s par for the course of the series.
I’m deliberately not saying more so as not to spoil things, but I’ve enjoyed this so much! Seeing Chloe doing better was such a wonderful thing. Living a life. Not being alone. I have "a Chloe" in my life and I desperately hope they’ll be able to calm down and get through the ever-present anger and sense of betrayal.
I’m really looking forward to the next books.
